Junzi Kitchen is a contemporary Chinese restaurant concept that began in 2015, founded by Yale graduates Lucas Sin, Yong Zhao, and Ming Bai. The first location opened near Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, with a menu centered on northern Chinese flavors, including noodle bowls and bings, presented in a modern, accessible style. Junzi quickly gained attention for its fresh ingredients and creative take on traditional recipes.
The company expanded to New York City by 2017, establishing sites in Morningside Heights and Greenwich Village. These locations attracted a diverse urban clientele and earned Junzi recognition in major food publications for blending authenticity with a streamlined dining experience. Over the years, Junzi Kitchen built a reputation for culinary innovation and a loyal following among both Chinese and non-Chinese diners.
As of November 2025, Junzi Kitchen has closed its original brick-and-mortar restaurants in New Haven and New York City. The company shifted its strategy in response to changing market conditions, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead of pursuing new leases or physical expansion, Junzi pivoted to pop-ups, collaborations, and virtual brands.
