Founded in 1938 by Charles E. Schmidt of Chicago, Illinois as a mail-order catalog geared towards tractor owners and farmers throughout America, Tractor Supply Company has since expanded its products and services and grown in leaps and bounds. By 1939, the first retail location had opened in Minot, North Dakota. Nearly eighty years later, TSC is now one of the largest rural lifestyle retailers in the United States with over 1,500 retail locations throughout forty-nine states. Headquartered in Brentwood, Tennessee, they currently boast annual revenues approximated at $6.2 billion and employ over 23,000 people.
While TSC was initially founded with tractors in mind, they are now a nationally recognized retailer of far more, including but not limited to, clothing and footwear, pet supplies, trailers and accessories, lawn and garden supplies, propane and heating supplies, tools and gun safes, fencing, welders and welding supplies, lawnmowers and power generators. With so many goods, their customers consist of farmers (both professional and hobby), horse owners, ranchers, homeowners, contractors, and tradesmen.
As they continue to grow, adding new locations, services, and goods to their expanding roster, TSC stays true to their mission, which according to their website is “to work hard, have fun and make money by providing legendary service and great products at everyday low prices.” Something we can all agree on!
