About Drexel Heritage Furniture

Company overview and description

Drexel Heritage Furniture began its journey in 1903, founded by a group of six partners in the picturesque setting of North Carolina's Blue Ridge Mountains. The company started with a simple yet elegant offering—a bedroom suite crafted from local oak, priced at $14.50. Over the years, Drexel Heritage distinguished itself by hiring in-house designers as early as the 1930s, a forward-thinking move that set the company apart in an industry that was just beginning to appreciate the importance of design. This approach allowed Drexel to stay ahead of changing tastes, offering a wide array of styles from French Provincial to mid-century modern, including the renowned Declaration collection.

The company saw significant growth in the 1950s, acquiring competitors like Table Rock Furniture and Heritage Furniture Co., and expanding its manufacturing presence in the Carolinas. By 1957, Drexel had transformed from a small operation into a major employer with 2,300 workers and a nationwide distribution network. The 1960s and 1970s further cemented its reach with contracts to supply furniture to government bodies, hotels, and educational institutions, bolstered by the acquisition of Southern Desk Company.

In 1968, Drexel became part of U.S. Plywood-Champion Papers, later known as Drexel Heritage Furnishings, under Furniture Brands International. Despite its reputation for quality American-made furniture, the brand faced challenges in the late 20th century, including increased competition and changing consumer preferences. The closure of its last manufacturing plant in Morganton, North Carolina, in 2014 marked the end of its domestic production.

By 2017, the company rebranded as Drexel, but the Drexel Heritage name had largely vanished from the retail scene. As of November 2025, Drexel Heritage does not operate any company-owned stores, and its products are primarily available through vintage and secondary markets. The brand is no longer pursuing expansion or maintaining an active retail presence.

For those in commercial real estate, Drexel Heritage's history is a testament to its past scale and influence. The brand was once a key player in the American furniture industry, known for its innovation, extensive product range, and significant institutional contracts.
