Roundy’s is a longstanding grocery retailer rooted in the Midwest, with a history dating back to its founding in Milwaukee in 1872. The company began as Smith, Roundy & Co., a wholesale grocer, and gradually built a strong retail presence across Wisconsin and Illinois. Over time, Roundy’s became known for operating several well-recognized grocery banners, including Pick 'n Save, Metro Market, and Mariano’s, serving both urban and suburban communities.

A pivotal moment in Roundy’s story came in December 2015, when it was acquired by The Kroger Co. for $800 million. Since joining Kroger, Roundy’s has benefited from the resources and operational scale of one of the nation’s largest supermarket companies. As of November 2025, Roundy’s operates 151 stores, with its core footprint in Wisconsin and a significant presence in the Chicago area through Mariano’s.

In recent years, the company’s approach has shifted from opening new stores to focusing on remodeling existing locations, upgrading technology, and improving operational efficiencies. While Roundy’s continues to consider select infill opportunities, there have been no major new market entries since the Kroger acquisition. All real estate decisions are now managed through Kroger’s Midwest and Great Lakes division, and the Roundy’s name is less visible to consumers, with most branding and social media handled under the Pick 'n Save and Mariano’s banners.

Roundy’s remains a key player in the region’s grocery sector, offering full-service supermarkets that include fresh departments, pharmacy services, and a mix of private label and organic products. Its established banners, stable store count, and integration with Kroger provide a high degree of credibility and consistency for landlords and developers. The company’s continued investment in store enhancements and customer experience, rather than rapid expansion, reflects a steady and reliable presence within its core Midwest markets.
