About Al’s Formal Wear
Company overview and description
Al’s Formal Wear was a regional tuxedo rental and formalwear chain that served customers across Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Colorado. The company specialized in men’s tuxedo and suit rentals for weddings, proms, and other special events, operating primarily in in‑line mall locations and neighborhood centers that drew steady event-driven traffic.
The business traces its roots to 1952, when founder Al Sankary opened a single tuxedo shop in Fort Worth, Texas. Over time, the brand grew from that original store into a multi-state chain with a meaningful presence in major Texas markets such as Houston, Dallas–Fort Worth, and San Antonio, along with select secondary cities in the broader region. Ownership later involved Alan B. Gaylor and related entities headquartered in the Houston area, who helped expand the footprint and formalize the corporate platform as the chain matured.
A notable milestone in the company’s history was the development of a sizable wholesale and distribution arm to support both Al’s stores and affiliated outlets. The company did not just run storefronts; it also supplied tuxedos and accessories to licensed departments in department stores and to outside accounts. This combination of retail and wholesale activity allowed Al’s to operate relatively compact stores while relying on centralized back-of-house infrastructure, making it a flexible user of small-format retail space in malls and strip centers.
During the 2000s and 2010s, Al’s Formal Wear functioned as one of the larger independent tuxedo providers in its region. The chain occupied traditional shop spaces clustered near bridal retailers, photography studios, and other event-focused uses that help drive cross-traffic. Its units typically required modest storage and fitting-room areas rather than extensive buildouts, which made the concept relatively straightforward to backfill or convert compared with more specialized operators.
As consumer behavior shifted and competition increased from national chains and online rental platforms, the company’s position weakened. By 2020, Al’s Formal Wear entered bankruptcy proceedings. As of August 2020, Jim’s Formal Wear, a national formalwear wholesaler and rental network, acquired substantially all of Al’s assets out of bankruptcy, including inventory, contracts, and intellectual property. Following this transaction, most Al’s-branded locations were closed or transitioned to other operators, and Al’s stopped functioning as an independent retail chain.
As of August 2020, Al’s Formal Wear no longer operated active brick-and-mortar stores, and its former units shifted to dark space, re-tenanting, or rebranding under new concepts. For landlords, brokers, and developers, any former Al’s location should now be viewed strictly as second-generation space, with site control and leasing decisions handled by property owners or, in limited cases, by Jim’s Formal Wear in the context of its own business model. The Al’s name and customer relationships live on within Jim’s Formal Wear’s broader portfolio, but there is no ongoing corporate expansion or real estate program tied to the historic Al’s Formal Wear store concept.
