About Barney’s Outlet
Company overview and description
Barneys Warehouse was the off-price outlet and online business tied to the former Barneys New York luxury department store. It focused on discounted designer apparel, shoes, accessories, and home goods that originated in Barneys’ full-line stores, giving shoppers access to high-end brands at reduced prices while helping the parent company clear seasonal and overstock inventory.
The broader Barneys story began in New York City in 1923, when Barney Pressman opened a men’s clothing store that eventually grew into a well-known luxury specialty retailer with high-profile flagships in Manhattan, Beverly Hills, and other major markets. As Barneys expanded its full-price footprint, it developed a warehouse channel to move marked-down product in a more organized way. What started as a practical clearance tool evolved into periodic New York warehouse sales that became local events, with long lines and strong demand from fashion-focused shoppers and resellers.
In the early 2010s, Barneys translated those warehouse sales into a more permanent outlet strategy. The company opened dedicated outlet locations branded as Barneys New York Warehouse or Barneys Warehouse in outlet centers and launched BarneysWarehouse.com as an off-price ecommerce site. These stores carried end-of-season Barneys merchandise and select product bought specifically for the outlet channel, putting the brand in direct competition with other luxury off-price players. The outlet fleet remained relatively small compared with the full-line stores, but it extended the Barneys name into a broader mix of outlet malls and value-oriented centers.
A major turning point came in 2019, when Barneys New York entered Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The company cited high occupancy costs and changing consumer behavior as key pressures. Authentic Brands Group acquired the Barneys intellectual property, and the full-price and outlet stores, including Barneys Warehouse, were ultimately closed and liquidated as part of the process. As of February 2020, Barneys Warehouse no longer operated physical stores, and there was no active corporate real estate team pursuing new leases or renewals for the outlet concept.
In the years since that restructuring, the Barneys name has lived on primarily as a licensed fashion brand, appearing within other retailers rather than as its own brick-and-mortar chain. Former Barneys Warehouse locations have largely been backfilled by other tenants or repurposed by landlords, and the outlet platform that once connected Barneys to outlet centers has not been revived. The BarneysWarehouse.com URL now resolves to a placeholder presence with no functioning ecommerce, corporate contacts, or leasing materials.
For landlords, brokers, and developers, Barneys Warehouse is best viewed today as a legacy luxury outlet format whose space has already cycled back into the market. Many of its former locations sit in strong centers and established trade areas, which has helped those boxes transition to new fashion and off-price concepts. The Barneys intellectual property now resides within Authentic Brands Group’s portfolio, but it no longer represents an active, site-seeking tenant in outlet or open-air projects.
