About Darque Tan

Darque Tan was once a well-known name in the indoor tanning salon industry, with a significant presence across several states including Texas, Florida, Nevada, and Colorado. The company began its journey in 1986, quickly rising to prominence by offering a variety of tanning services such as UV tanning beds and spray tanning, along with premium spa services. At its height, Darque Tan operated over 100 locations, making it one of the largest privately owned tanning chains in the United States. The brand was recognized for its luxurious salon settings, extended operating hours, and a membership model that appealed to customers looking for both convenience and a touch of luxury.

During the 1990s and early 2000s, Darque Tan expanded rapidly. It grew by acquiring smaller competitors and opening new outlets in bustling retail areas. The brand became associated with high-end tanning experiences, often showcasing advanced equipment and exclusive product offerings. By 2010, Darque Tan had established a strong presence in major cities, particularly in Houston, where it maintained a considerable number of locations.

However, the indoor tanning industry began to face challenges due to increased regulatory scrutiny and changing consumer preferences, driven by a growing awareness of the health risks linked to UV exposure. These challenges, coupled with rising operational costs and competition from other beauty services, led to a gradual reduction in Darque Tan’s number of stores. By the mid-2010s, the company started to close less profitable locations and streamline its operations.

In 2017, Darque Tan filed for bankruptcy and ended its operations. Many of its remaining salons were acquired by competitors or transformed into independent businesses. This closure marked a significant shift in the landscape of large-scale tanning chains in the U.S., highlighting broader industry challenges. As of November 2025, Darque Tan no longer operates any corporate-owned locations, and its brand assets have largely been retired. For those in commercial real estate, Darque Tan's story is a reminder of the dynamic nature of retail spaces and the potential for adaptive reuse in prime locations.
