About El Chico
El Chico is a well-established Tex-Mex restaurant chain with a rich history in the American Southwest. The brand was founded in 1940 by the Cuellar family in Dallas, Texas, during a time when Mexican cuisine was still relatively unfamiliar to many Americans. Over the years, El Chico played a pioneering role in popularizing Tex-Mex flavors, expanding its presence across Texas and into neighboring states. By the late 1970s, the brand had grown to 75 locations and was acquired by Campbell Taggart, a significant player in the food industry. In 1983, Gilbert Cuellar, a descendant of the founding family, reacquired the company, ushering in a new era that focused on both company-owned and franchised outlets.
Today, as of November 2025, El Chico operates 13 restaurants, primarily in Texas and Oklahoma. This reflects a strategic contraction from its peak size, with the company concentrating on its core markets to maintain operational stability and uphold its brand legacy. Despite the reduction in locations, El Chico remains a beloved fixture in the South Central United States, known for its traditional sit-down dining experience. The restaurant is celebrated for its signature dishes, such as tamales and chili, and its commitment to serving freshly prepared meals on heated plates.
For commercial real estate professionals, El Chico is a reliable tenant, offering a time-tested concept that has adapted to changing market conditions over the years. Its presence in shopping centers and suburban areas provides a consistent Tex-Mex dining option that appeals to families and groups, making it a valuable addition to any retail environment. With a focus on stability and strategic site selection in its priority markets of Texas and Oklahoma, El Chico continues to be a recognizable and trusted brand in the region.
