The company began in 1931 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, originally serving as the retail extension of Zondervan Publishing House. Over the decades, Family Christian Stores expanded its reach steadily, becoming a familiar presence in suburban shopping centers and retail corridors across the country.

A notable milestone in the company’s history occurred in 2013, when Family Christian transitioned to operate as a nonprofit, directing its profits to Christian charities. This shift followed its acquisition by a private equity group in 2012 and reflected a broader commitment to supporting faith-based initiatives. As of May 2017, Family Christian Stores operated 240 locations nationwide, making it one of the largest Christian retail chains in the country at that time.
