About Family Christian Stores

Family Christian Stores was a leading retailer in the United States dedicated to Christian books, Bibles, music, gifts, and church supplies. The company began in 1931 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, originally serving as the retail extension of Zondervan Publishing House. Over the decades, Family Christian Stores expanded its reach steadily, becoming a familiar presence in suburban shopping centers and retail corridors across the country.

A notable milestone in the company’s history occurred in 2013, when Family Christian transitioned to operate as a nonprofit, directing its profits to Christian charities. This shift followed its acquisition by a private equity group in 2012 and reflected a broader commitment to supporting faith-based initiatives. As of May 2017, Family Christian Stores operated 240 locations nationwide, making it one of the largest Christian retail chains in the country at that time.

The company’s approach to retail emphasized community engagement, with stores often hosting author events, music performances, and resource fairs for local churches. Its presence as an anchor tenant in many shopping centers contributed to steady foot traffic and a reliable customer base, especially among families and faith communities.

Despite its strong brand recognition and broad footprint, Family Christian Stores faced significant challenges in the years leading up to its closure. The rise of online retail and changing consumer habits led to declining sales and two bankruptcy filings, first in 2015 and again in 2017. In early 2017, the company announced it would close all remaining stores, completing the process by May of that year. Since then, Family Christian has continued as an online retailer under new ownership, but the original company and all physical locations have ceased operations.

Family Christian Stores’ legacy remains visible in the charitable work supported during its final years and in the lasting impact it had on Christian retailing and the communities it served. Its departure left a noticeable gap in the religious retail sector, particularly in markets where it had been a longstanding anchor.
