Food Basics

Food Basics was a discount supermarket chain that operated in the United States under the ownership of The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company, commonly known as A&P. The chain launched in 2001, at a time when A&P was seeking new ways to serve shoppers looking for essential groceries at lower prices. Inspired by European discount grocers, Food Basics offered a streamlined shopping experience with a limited selection of staple items, minimal store décor, and reduced service, all designed to keep costs down for consumers.

The chain focused its presence in urban and suburban areas across the Northeast, particularly in states like New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania. Food Basics was positioned to appeal to budget-conscious shoppers and often filled second-generation grocery spaces, making it a flexible option for landlords and developers seeking reliable backfill tenants in densely populated markets.

A notable milestone in the company’s history came during the early 2010s, when Food Basics reached its peak footprint with an estimated 12 to 20 stores. The brand played a strategic role within A&P’s broader portfolio, which included other well-known supermarket banners. Food Basics was a key part of A&P’s efforts to regain stability during periods of financial difficulty, as the company aimed to compete with other discount grocers and dollar stores.

However, the chain’s growth was ultimately limited by A&P’s ongoing financial struggles. In 2015, A&P filed for bankruptcy and began liquidating all of its supermarket brands, including Food Basics. As of December 2015, all Food Basics stores in the United States had either closed or been sold to competitors. By November 2025, there are no active Food Basics locations, and the brand no longer maintains a presence in the U.S. grocery market.
