About Frazee Paint & Wallcovering
Frazee Paint & Wallcovering began in 1896 as a small San Diego paint shop serving local builders and homeowners. Over the decades, it became a familiar name throughout California, Arizona, and Nevada, building a network of stores and a reputation for reliable products and knowledgeable service. As of July 2014, Frazee operated 82 stores across these markets, catering to both professional contractors and retail customers.
A major turning point came in July 2014, when The Sherwin-Williams Company acquired Frazee Paint & Wallcovering. This acquisition marked the end of Frazee’s independent growth, as all stores were either rebranded or consolidated under the Sherwin-Williams name. Since then, no new Frazee-branded locations have opened, and the Frazee identity now exists only as a legacy within Sherwin-Williams’ broader operations.
During its final years as an independent brand, Frazee’s presence was concentrated in key Western markets, particularly California, Arizona, and Nevada. Its established footprint and longstanding relationships in these regions contributed to Sherwin-Williams’ strategic expansion in the West. Today, real estate decisions for former Frazee locations fall under Sherwin-Williams’ corporate management, and all public-facing Frazee channels are inactive.
Frazee’s story illustrates how a regional retail brand can shape local market dynamics and later become part of a national platform. Its transition into Sherwin-Williams’ network reflects the ongoing evolution of retail footprints and the consolidation trends that continue to influence commercial real estate opportunities in the paint and coatings sector.
