About Fred’s

Fred’s began in 1947 as a single discount store in Coldwater, Mississippi, and over the following decades became a familiar presence in small towns and rural communities across the southeastern United States. The company steadily expanded, reaching more than 500 stores by the late 1990s and serving as a key retail anchor in many secondary and tertiary markets. Fred’s was notable for its ability to adapt its store formats, operating both general merchandise and pharmacy-focused locations, which allowed it to fit the needs of a wide range of communities often underserved by larger national chains.

As of April 2019, Fred’s operated approximately 557 stores. The company’s flexible approach to store size and offerings made it a frequent tenant in shopping centers and standalone sites throughout the Southeast, with a concentration in states like Tennessee, Mississippi, Georgia, and Alabama. Fred’s played a significant role in bringing essential goods and pharmacy services to areas where retail options were limited.

In the five years leading up to 2019, Fred’s faced mounting competition from big-box retailers and dollar store chains, along with internal operational challenges. In April 2019, the company announced a major restructuring plan and began closing locations in an effort to stabilize its finances. This process accelerated over the following months, and by September 2019, Fred’s filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. All remaining stores were closed by October 2019, and the company’s real estate assets were liquidated through bankruptcy proceedings.

Fred’s legacy is marked by its regional scale, adaptability in store formats, and longstanding role as a retail anchor in smaller markets. Its former locations have drawn interest from landlords and investors seeking to repurpose well-located properties in communities that continue to value accessible retail options. At the time of closure, Fred’s operated independently and did not have a parent company.
