About Guthrie’s Chicken
Guthrie’s Chicken is a family-owned restaurant chain that has been serving chicken fingers and Southern-style sides since 1965. The brand started in Haleyville, Alabama, when Hal Guthrie opened the first location and eventually made chicken fingers the centerpiece of the menu, a move that set the standard for many similar restaurants that followed. Over the years, Guthrie’s built a loyal following, especially in college towns, where its casual atmosphere and consistent food attracted students and locals alike.
The company stayed family-run for decades, gradually expanding beyond its Alabama roots. In 2005, Guthrie’s began franchising to accelerate growth, and since then, it has steadily opened new locations across the Southeast and into select Western markets. As of November 2025, Guthrie’s operates about 70 restaurants in 13 states, including recent openings in North Carolina, Nevada, and Mississippi. The brand continues to target high-traffic suburban corridors and college towns, balancing corporate and franchise growth.
Guthrie’s remains under the ownership of the Guthrie family, with Joe Kelly Guthrie leading as CEO. The company’s long history, recognizable format, and steady expansion make it a reliable presence in retail and mixed-use developments. Its ongoing growth and focus on accessible, familiar food have helped it become a well-known name in the fast-casual segment.
