About H Mart
H Mart is the largest Asian-American supermarket chain in the United States, specializing in Korean and other Asian groceries, fresh produce, seafood, and prepared foods. The company was founded in 1982 by Il Yeon Kwon, a South Korean immigrant, who opened the first store in Woodside, Queens, New York. Originally named Han Ah Reum, which means “one arm full of groceries,” the business began as a single corner store serving the local community. Over the years, H Mart has remained a family-run operation, with Il Yeon Kwon still serving as CEO, joined by co-presidents Elizabeth Kwon and their children, Brian and Stacey.
As of November 2025, H Mart operates more than 100 stores across 18 states in the U.S., as well as locations in Canada and the United Kingdom. The company’s stores are recognized for their clean, modern layouts and extensive selection of Asian products, including Korean, Japanese, Chinese, and Southeast Asian staples. H Mart has become an essential destination for multicultural communities and food enthusiasts looking for ingredients and prepared foods not typically found in mainstream supermarkets.
In the past five years, H Mart has accelerated its expansion, opening new stores in major metropolitan areas and regions with growing Asian-American populations. Recent growth includes new locations in Dallas, Plano, and Carrollton, Texas, with the Dallas store opening in October 2025. These stores often feature in-store bakeries and food halls, offering a variety of Asian eateries and specialty vendors, which helps create a vibrant shopping experience and draws a diverse customer base.
H Mart is headquartered in Lyndhurst, New Jersey, and remains privately held by the founding family. The company is known for its ability to anchor and revitalize shopping centers, frequently serving as a cultural hub within its communities. Its presence often increases foot traffic and supports neighboring businesses, making it a valuable tenant for landlords and developers. H Mart’s continued growth and focus on large-format retail spaces in both urban and suburban markets reflect its strong position in the grocery sector and its appeal to a wide range of shoppers.
