Haggen Food & Pharmacy is a regional grocery operator with deep roots in Washington state, known for emphasizing fresh, local products and full-service pharmacy services. The company was founded in 1933 by Ben and Dorothy Haggen as a single store in Bellingham, Washington, and grew steadily across the Pacific Northwest over the following decades. In 2014, Haggen made an ambitious move by acquiring 146 stores from Albertsons and Safeway, which briefly positioned it as one of the largest independent grocers in the western United States. That rapid expansion, however, proved difficult to sustain operationally and financially. By late 2015, Haggen filed for bankruptcy protection and ultimately sold most of those acquired stores back to Albertsons.

Today, as of November 2025, Haggen operates 15 stores, all located in Washington. The company is now a wholly owned subsidiary of Albertsons Companies, Inc., which provides operational support and access to broader supply chain resources. Haggen maintains a distinct regional identity, with stores designed to reflect the character of their neighborhoods and a commitment to community engagement and customer service. The chain continues to emphasize a curated selection of natural and organic products alongside conventional grocery offerings.

Haggen's current posture is one of stability and optimization rather than expansion. The company is not actively growing its store base, and any real estate activity is coordinated through Albertsons Companies' Northwest Division, with a preference for strategic infill or relocation opportunities within its existing Washington footprint.
