About Hartmann
Company overview and description
Hartmann is a global manufacturer of molded fibre packaging that primarily serves industrial egg and fruit producers along with major food retailers. The company supplies fibre-based egg cartons, trays and related formats that protect products in transit and on shelf, while helping customers meet recyclability and sustainability goals. Its packaging is used across modern retail supply chains, supported by technical expertise in both packaging design and molded fibre production machinery.
Founded in Denmark in 1917, Hartmann was one of the first companies to introduce molded fibre packaging in Europe and began by producing fibre egg cartons for local producers. Over the following decades it expanded its operations across Europe and then into North and South America and Asia, adding in-house machinery and process know-how so that large egg producers and packers could scale molded fibre production reliably.
A notable milestone in the company’s more recent history was its entry into Southeast Asia through Malaysia. Starting with the integration of local producer Siangpack into the Thornico Group in 2012, Hartmann moved to majority ownership in 2014 and full ownership by 2021. That business is now part of the Hartmann Packaging platform and functions as the group’s manufacturing base for Malaysia and surrounding markets.
As of December 2025, Hartmann operates 17 production plants across Europe, North America, South America and Asia and serves customers in more than 50 markets worldwide. The company has grown its footprint in Asia, including Southeast Asia, as a priority region while continuing to invest in its established networks in Europe and the Americas. Over roughly the last five years, this has meant strengthening its molded fibre capacity, modernizing facilities and integrating regional operations so that production can be closer to agricultural and retail hubs.
Today, Hartmann focuses on renewable raw materials, recyclability and reliable supply, positioning itself as a long-term industrial partner to egg and food producers rather than a consumer-facing retail brand. In addition to packaging, it provides machinery and process support that allow integrated, high-volume production at customer sites, which can influence demand for manufacturing, logistics and distribution space in key agricultural regions.
Hartmann is part of the Thornico Group, a privately owned Danish business group held by the Stadil family with interests in packaging, food, food technology, shipping, sports and fashion, real estate and digital companies. Within Thornico’s packaging division, Hartmann works alongside related molded fibre businesses in Europe and South America, creating a platform with scale, technical depth and a stable industrial customer base.
For landlords, brokers and developers, Hartmann typically appears as a manufacturing and logistics occupier rather than a retailer, with facilities that support regional egg and food supply chains across multiple continents. In Southeast Asia, for example, Hartmann Packaging (M) Sdn. Bhd. serves as a local production hub, reflecting the broader group model of combining local manufacturing with shared technology standards and group-level investment.
