Hollywood Tans began in New Jersey in 1994, entering the indoor tanning industry at a time when UV tanning was gaining popularity. The company distinguished itself by introducing vertical tanning booths, which offered a faster and more hygienic alternative to traditional tanning beds. This approach helped Hollywood Tans expand rapidly through franchising, and by the early 2000s, the brand operated over 300 locations across more than 20 states, with a strong presence in the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, and parts of the Sunbelt.

The company’s growth was fueled by its recognizable brand and standardized salon layouts, making it a familiar name in suburban retail centers and neighborhood shopping plazas. Hollywood Tans reached a notable milestone as one of the largest tanning salon chains in the United States, offering a consistent experience that appealed to a wide range of customers seeking convenience.

However, the last five years have seen significant change. By 2018, Hollywood Tans ceased all corporate operations. Most franchise locations have since closed or rebranded, reflecting broader shifts in consumer preferences toward sunless tanning options and increased awareness of the health risks associated with UV exposure. As of November 2025, there is no active corporate entity or expansion effort, and only a handful of independently operated salons continue to use the Hollywood Tans name. No real estate or franchise contacts remain.

Today, Hollywood Tans is best recognized for its former scale and the second-generation retail opportunities its standardized spaces created. While its corporate presence has ended, the brand’s legacy is still visible in a few remaining salons and in the footprints it left behind in retail corridors across the country.
