About Huntington Bank
Company overview and description
Huntington National Bank is a full-service regional bank that focuses on consumer, small business, commercial and wealth management clients across the Midwest, with select specialty business lines that reach customers nationwide. It operates as the primary banking subsidiary of Huntington Bancshares Incorporated, a publicly traded financial services company. The bank offers everyday retail and business banking, commercial lending and treasury services, and private banking and investment solutions, supported by both a sizable branch network and a growing digital platform.
The company traces its origins to 1866, when P. W. Huntington opened P. W. Huntington & Company in Columbus, Ohio. What began as a local merchant bank gradually expanded across Ohio and neighboring states through steady organic growth and targeted acquisitions. A notable step up in scale came with the 2016 acquisition of FirstMerit Corporation, which significantly broadened Huntington’s reach in the Great Lakes region and reinforced its position as a leading bank in Ohio and surrounding markets.
More recently, Huntington has grown through the 2021 all-stock merger with Detroit-based TCF Financial Corporation. That transaction expanded the bank’s presence in Michigan and Minnesota, added meaningful scale in Colorado and the broader Mountain West, and brought in specialized commercial and equipment finance capabilities that now operate on a national basis. The TCF merger also set off a multi-year effort to integrate systems, realign overlapping branches, and refine the combined network for long-term performance.
As of February 2024, Huntington operates approximately 1,000 full-service branches and thousands of ATMs, with a dense footprint across Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, West Virginia, Colorado and Minnesota, along with select offices that support its specialty commercial and equipment finance businesses. The branch network includes a mix of freestanding sites, in-line spaces, in-store locations and office-anchored facilities for commercial and wealth teams, which allows the bank to match format and size to the needs of each trade area.
Over the past five years, Huntington has shifted from broad geographic expansion to a more selective growth and optimization strategy. Following the TCF merger, management has focused on pruning redundant locations while opening new branches in higher-growth corridors and refining layouts to support a more digital, advice-focused model. New investment has concentrated in priority markets such as Ohio, Michigan, Minnesota, Colorado, Illinois and Indiana, with an emphasis on suburban growth nodes and mixed-use urban infill where households and businesses are adding density. At the same time, Huntington continues to extend its specialized commercial and equipment finance platforms into additional regions across the country.
For property owners and developers, Huntington represents a long-tenured, investment-grade bank with a clear commitment to maintaining a strong physical presence in its core territories. Its mix of branch sizes and formats, combined with a strategy centered on infill, selective new openings and long-term customer relationships, makes Huntington a relevant prospect for a range of neighborhood, suburban and mixed-use projects across its key Midwestern and Mountain West markets.
