About Jo-Ann Super Stores
Jo-Ann Super Stores, widely recognized as JOANN Fabric and Craft Stores, began in 1943 as a small fabric shop in Cleveland, Ohio. Over the decades, it grew into the largest specialty retailer of fabrics, sewing supplies, and crafts in the United States, operating hundreds of large-format stores nationwide. The brand became a familiar destination for hobbyists, crafters, and professionals seeking a broad selection of materials and tools.
By the early 2020s, JOANN had established a significant footprint, with stores in nearly every state. However, facing changing consumer habits and industry pressures, the company filed for bankruptcy in 2024 and ceased all retail operations by October 2025. All physical locations closed, and the JOANN brand, along with its private label products and store concepts, was acquired by Michaels Stores, Inc.
As of October 2025, Michaels is integrating JOANN’s offerings into its own stores, expanding its fabric and sewing categories to serve the customers who once shopped at JOANN. The transition marks a major shift in the craft retail landscape, with Michaels now leading the market in this segment. For landlords, brokers, and developers, the closure of JOANN stores represents a notable change in the use of large-format retail spaces, while the brand’s legacy continues through Michaels’ expanded presence.
