About Lucille Roberts Health Spa
Lucille Roberts Health Spa began in 1969, founded by Lucille Roberts with a vision to provide accessible, women-focused fitness centers in the New York metropolitan area. Over the following decades, the brand became a familiar presence in urban and suburban retail corridors, known for its affordable memberships and supportive atmosphere tailored to women. By the 1980s and 1990s, Lucille Roberts had grown to more than 45 locations, primarily across New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, and was recognized as one of the largest women-only gym chains in the Northeast.
A major milestone came in June 2017, when Town Sports International Holdings, Inc.—the parent company of New York Sports Clubs—acquired Lucille Roberts. This acquisition was part of a broader strategy to consolidate regional fitness brands. After the change in ownership, several Lucille Roberts locations were rebranded or integrated into the New York Sports Clubs network. The brand’s standalone footprint began to diminish, and by late 2020, the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and Town Sports International’s bankruptcy led to the closure of most remaining Lucille Roberts locations.
As of November 2025, Lucille Roberts no longer operates standalone gyms, and there are no plans for new locations. The brand’s social media presence remains online but inactive. Although Lucille Roberts is no longer active in the marketplace, its legacy is notable for shaping the women’s fitness club format and establishing credibility in densely populated retail environments. The brand’s history of regional scale and adaptability continues to be recognized among commercial real estate professionals who recall its influence on fitness tenancy and community-driven wellness concepts.
