Marc Glassman, known to most shoppers as Marc’s, operates a prominent chain of discount drugstores and grocery stores across northern and central Ohio. The company was founded in 1979 by Marc Glassman, who opened the first store in Middleburg Heights. Early in its history, Marc’s faced a significant challenge when a fire damaged its original location in 1980, but the business quickly recovered and continued to grow. A key milestone came in 1983, when Marc Glassman acquired the Bernie Shulman chain, expanding Marc’s regional footprint and consolidating its presence in the area. By the early 1990s, all Bernie Shulman stores had been rebranded under the Marc’s name, and the company introduced its first large-format ‘superstore’ in Garfield Heights in 1992.

As of November 2025, Marc’s operates 60 stores throughout the Cleveland, Akron, Canton, Youngstown, and Columbus metro areas. The company is privately held and does not franchise; every location is company-owned. Marc’s has consistently focused on high-traffic suburban and urban sites, and continues to pursue both new construction and second-generation retail opportunities. In recent years, Marc’s has demonstrated a pattern of upgrading older stores and replacing underperforming locations with larger, modern facilities. Notably, the chain opened a major new store in Canton in 2020 and remains active in site searches, particularly in the Columbus and Cleveland regions.
