Mattress Discounters was founded in 1978 in the Washington, D.C. area and grew into a significant regional mattress retailer over the next three decades. The chain built its reputation on value pricing and a broad selection of national mattress brands, expanding from its Mid-Atlantic base into California and beyond. By the early 2000s, the company operated hundreds of locations across suburban and urban markets, establishing itself as a familiar name in specialty mattress retail.

The mattress retail sector underwent substantial consolidation in the 2010s as competition intensified and larger players sought to build national scale. In September 2014, Mattress Firm, Inc. acquired Mattress Discounters as part of a $425 million transaction that also included Sleep Train and Sleep Country USA. This acquisition reflected Mattress Firm's strategy to consolidate regional brands and expand its national footprint as the largest specialty mattress retailer in the United States at that time.

Following the acquisition, Mattress Discounters underwent a systematic rebranding process. Most locations were converted to the Mattress Firm banner, while others were closed as part of the integration. By 2016, the Mattress Discounters brand had been phased out entirely, and as of November 2025, no independent Mattress Discounters stores remain in operation. All former locations now operate under the Mattress Firm brand.
