About MC Sports

MC Sports was a regional sporting goods retailer based in Grand Rapids, Michigan, with a legacy dating back to its founding in 1946. The company started as Michigan Sporting Goods Distributors, Inc. and gradually built a strong presence throughout the Midwest, offering athletic apparel, footwear, and equipment to families and amateur athletes. Over the decades, MC Sports expanded beyond Michigan, reaching into Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Missouri, and Iowa. Its most significant period of growth came during the 1980s and 1990s, when the brand established itself as a familiar anchor in many Midwest shopping centers.

As of February 2017, MC Sports operated 68 stores, primarily occupying mid-box spaces in power centers and community shopping centers. These locations were typically well-situated in high-traffic retail corridors, making them attractive for a broad range of uses. MC Sports was known for its broad assortment of team sports gear, fitness equipment, and outdoor recreation products, and for its community-focused approach, supporting local teams and youth sports initiatives.

The company’s trajectory changed in early 2017 when it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection due to declining sales and increased competition from national chains and online retailers. By April 2017, MC Sports had closed all its stores and liquidated its inventory, ending more than seven decades of operations. No successor or acquiring company emerged, and all locations were vacated.

For landlords, brokers, and developers, MC Sports’ exit left a portfolio of sizable retail spaces across the Midwest. These former stores, with established footprints and visibility, present opportunities for redevelopment or new tenancy in markets where MC Sports was once a key regional player. The brand’s legacy is reflected in the continued interest in its former locations, which remain relevant for repositioning in today’s retail landscape.
