About Nine West
Nine West began in 1978 as a New York City shoe brand, quickly gaining a reputation for stylish, affordable footwear for women. The company’s name comes from its original address at 9 West 57th Street, a nod to its Manhattan roots and fashion-forward identity. Over the decades, Nine West expanded into handbags, accessories, and apparel, becoming a familiar name in department stores and shopping centers across the United States and around the world.
In recent years, the brand’s approach has changed. After filing for bankruptcy in 2018 and being acquired by Authentic Brands Group, Nine West closed all its company-owned stores in the United States. As of November 2025, the brand no longer operates standalone retail locations domestically. Instead, Nine West products are sold through major department stores, specialty retailers, and online platforms, with a growing emphasis on international licensing partnerships in markets like Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America.
This shift has allowed Nine West to maintain its presence in the fashion landscape while adapting to evolving retail trends. The brand continues to be recognized for its accessible style and broad appeal, with its products widely available through established wholesale channels and digital outlets. For landlords, brokers, and developers, Nine West’s legacy as a major retail tenant and its ongoing partnerships with large retailers highlight its enduring influence in the industry.
