About Omega Sports
Omega Sports was an independent sporting goods retailer that began in Greensboro, North Carolina in 1978. Over the decades, the company built a reputation for serving local athletes, schools, and families with a wide range of athletic footwear, apparel, and equipment. Its stores became familiar fixtures in communities across the Piedmont Triad, Triangle, and Charlotte regions, offering both national brands and specialized gear for running, team sports, and general fitness. Omega Sports was known for its approachable staff and its support of local sports programs, which helped it become a trusted resource for many North Carolinians.
As of August 2023, Omega Sports had closed all of its retail locations after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy the previous month. The company cited increased competition from national chains and online retailers, as well as challenges brought on by the pandemic, as reasons for its decision to cease operations. Omega Sports was not acquired and did not pursue new locations or expansion following its bankruptcy. This closure marked the end of a 45-year presence in the region.
During its final years, Omega Sports operated a mix of inline and freestanding stores, many located in high-traffic shopping centers and suburban corridors. The company’s exit has left multiple retail vacancies throughout North Carolina, particularly in established suburban trade areas. For landlords, brokers, and developers, Omega Sports represented a credible anchor tenant with flexible store formats and a history of strong community engagement. Its departure has created new opportunities for second-generation retail space in markets where the brand was once a staple.
