About Shoe City (YCMC)

Shoe City, also known as YCMC (Your City My City), was a regional footwear and streetwear retailer based in Baltimore, Maryland. The company began in 1949 when Mordechai “Marty” Margolis opened the first store in Baltimore, setting the stage for a family-run business that became a fixture in the Mid-Atlantic retail scene. Over the years, Shoe City grew steadily, eventually operating 39 stores as of March 2023, with a strong presence across Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C.

The retailer built its reputation by offering a curated mix of athletic footwear and urban apparel, including exclusive releases from major brands like Nike and Adidas. Shoe City’s approach resonated with a diverse urban customer base and made it a key account for top athletic brands in the region. In addition to its physical stores, the company expanded its reach through its YCMC.com e-commerce platform, which became an important part of its business in the last decade.

Shoe City was known for its community involvement, regularly supporting local events and youth initiatives, which helped foster loyalty and trust among its customers. This community focus, combined with its strong brand partnerships, contributed to its credibility and staying power in the competitive urban retail market.

In March 2023, Shoe City and its parent company, ESCO Ltd., filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The company cited ongoing financial pressures, including those brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic and changing consumer shopping habits. All retail operations ceased, and the entire store fleet was closed and liquidated by May 2023, marking the end of a 74-year legacy in the region. While the brand’s social media channels remain online as of November 2025, Shoe City no longer operates any stores or e-commerce business. This history illustrates the shifting landscape of urban retail and the challenges even well-established, community-focused operators can face.
