About Signature Bank

Signature Bank was established in New York in 2001 and quickly developed a strong presence in commercial real estate lending, private banking, and digital banking services. Over more than two decades, the bank became known for its relationship-driven approach, serving clients across the New York metropolitan area and select markets nationwide. Signature Bank built a reputation for responsive service and innovation, particularly in digital banking and its early engagement with cryptocurrency-related deposits.

The bank’s growth story included a period of rapid expansion, both organically and through strategic initiatives, which positioned it as a significant competitor among regional and national banks. At its height, Signature Bank operated a network of branches throughout New York and was publicly traded on the NASDAQ.

A major milestone in the bank’s history occurred in March 2023, when Signature Bank was seized by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation after experiencing rapid deposit outflows and asset quality challenges. This event was linked to concentrated exposure to cryptocurrency deposits and broader market instability. On March 19, 2023, the FDIC arranged for substantially all of Signature Bank’s assets and liabilities to be transferred to Flagstar Bank, N.A., a subsidiary of Flagstar Financial Inc.

As of November 2025, Signature Bank no longer operates independently and is not accepting new business. Its former locations and services have been integrated into Flagstar Bank, N.A., which, as of June 30, 2025, reported $92.2 billion in assets and maintains a significant presence in commercial banking. Signature Bank’s legacy remains relevant as a case study in the risks and opportunities associated with specialized deposit bases and rapid sector growth, as well as the importance of asset-liability management for financial institutions with a commercial real estate focus. For all banking services previously offered by Signature Bank, clients are now directed to Flagstar Bank, N.A.
