About Smashburger
Smashburger is a fast-casual restaurant chain known for its made-to-order burgers, chicken sandwiches, and sides. The company began in Denver, Colorado in 2007, founded by Rick Schaden and Tom Ryan, and quickly gained attention for its signature technique of smashing fresh Angus beef on a hot grill to create a flavorful sear. This approach helped set Smashburger apart in the competitive burger market and fueled its early expansion.
A major milestone in the company’s history came in 2018, when Jollibee Foods Corporation, a global foodservice group based in the Philippines, completed its full acquisition of Smashburger. This move provided the brand with additional resources and an international platform for growth. Since then, Smashburger has continued to evolve, expanding its presence in both new and existing markets. Over the past five years, the company has focused on a mix of suburban and urban infill locations, with a balanced approach between corporate-owned and franchised stores.
As of November 2025, Smashburger operates 227 restaurants across 35 states, the District of Columbia, and two Canadian provinces. The brand has also made inroads into select international markets, with priority growth areas including the United States, Canada, Central America, the Middle East, and the United Kingdom. Recent years have seen Smashburger adapt to changing consumer preferences by introducing flexible formats such as drive-thru and urban inline locations, making it a fit for a variety of retail environments, from high-traffic corridors to mixed-use developments.
Smashburger’s menu often includes regionally inspired items and local craft beer partnerships, reflecting a willingness to tailor offerings to local tastes. The company continues to invest in digital ordering platforms and regularly introduces new menu items, supporting its steady growth pipeline. With its established brand, adaptable store formats, and ongoing expansion, Smashburger remains a recognized and credible tenant for a range of commercial real estate settings. The company’s headquarters are still in Denver, and its leadership team brings extensive experience in restaurant operations and growth strategy.
