The business was founded in 1972 by Stewart Spinks, who started with a single gas station and gradually built the company into a regional fixture. Over the years, Spinx has grown steadily, and as of November 2025, the company operates 84 stores throughout South Carolina and North Carolina. Its network covers both urban and suburban corridors, with a particular concentration in Upstate South Carolina, Columbia, Charleston, and the Charlotte area.

The leadership transitioned to Stewart’s son, Steve Spinks, in 2012, maintaining the company’s family ownership and local focus.
