Sun Trust Bank

SunTrust Bank was established in 1891 and developed into a prominent regional bank headquartered in Atlanta. Over the years, the company expanded its reach across the southeastern United States, operating about 1,400 branches as of December 2019. SunTrust offered a wide range of financial services, including retail and commercial banking, wealth management, and investment solutions, serving millions of customers throughout its footprint.

A significant milestone in SunTrust’s history occurred in December 2019, when it merged with BB&T Corporation. This merger created Truist Financial Corporation, combining the strengths and resources of both institutions. The integration brought together SunTrust’s established branch network and customer relationships with BB&T’s complementary markets and capabilities. As of December 2019, SunTrust’s entire branch network and operations were incorporated into Truist, and the SunTrust name was retired.

Today, the legacy of SunTrust is reflected in Truist’s extensive presence across the Southeast and beyond. The combined company, headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina, now operates more than 2,600 branches in 27 states and manages over $500 billion in assets. For commercial real estate professionals, the transition from SunTrust to Truist has resulted in a larger, more diversified branch network and a substantial real estate portfolio. This evolution has reshaped the banking landscape in the region, positioning Truist as a major player with a broad and credible footprint. All commercial real estate matters related to the former SunTrust portfolio are now handled by Truist Financial Corporation.
