The company’s origins date back to 1904, when local investors in Thomasville, North Carolina, formed the Thomasville Chair Company to produce chairs in the heart of the Piedmont Triad furniture region. Over the following decades, the business expanded beyond chairs into case goods and upholstered furniture and developed into one of the better-known American wood furniture brands by the mid‑20th century. A key milestone came in 1995, when Furniture Brands International acquired Thomasville and used the brand as a platform for both wholesale placements and a rollout of Thomasville Home Furnishings galleries and freestanding stores across the United States.

The chain model began to unwind as the broader furniture industry consolidated and struggled after the 2008–2009 downturn. Furniture Brands International filed for Chapter 11 protection in 2013, and private equity firm KPS Capital Partners created Heritage Home Group to own and license brands including Thomasville. For landlords, brokers, and developers, Thomasville today is most relevant as a recognizable heritage brand that shows up inside other operators’ footprints rather than as a driver of new big-box leases.
