The business began in 1969, when founder Jim Weichert opened a single real estate office in Chatham, New Jersey. From that base the firm grew steadily through the 1970s and 1980s across New Jersey and the Mid-Atlantic, then into nearby states as its agent base and transaction volume increased. A key milestone came in 2001 with the creation of Weichert Real Estate Affiliates, Inc., which allowed the brand to expand through franchising in addition to its company-owned offices. In 2023 the company entered Portugal through an affiliation, and in 2024 Weichert Real Estate Affiliates signed a licensing agreement with PalmAruba Group in Noord, Aruba, which now operates as Weichert – Aruba Realty.
