At its height in the early 2010s, Wet Seal operated hundreds of stores across the United States, heavily concentrated in regional malls and outlet environments. Stores focused on fast-changing assortments of juniors apparel, footwear, and accessories designed to capture frequent visits from younger shoppers. For landlords and leasing teams, the brand functioned as a recognizable in-line fashion name that helped drive teen traffic and complemented larger anchors and entertainment uses.

As consumer spending moved online and mall visits declined, Wet Seal struggled with intense fast-fashion competition and the fixed costs of a large brick-and-mortar fleet. The company closed underperforming locations and shuttered the Arden B chain by 2015 in an effort to stabilize the business. Those measures did not reverse the trend. Wet Seal ultimately filed for bankruptcy, shut down its remaining physical stores, and transferred its intellectual property through bankruptcy proceedings.
