McDonald's is the world's largest chain of hamburger fast food restaurants which serves around 68 million customers daily in 119 countries at 35,000 outlets. The company was founded in 1940 by brothers Richard and Maurice McDonald as a barbeque restaurant.
As their business started growing, they reorganized their business in 1948 as a hamburger stand using production line principles. In 1955 businessman Ray Kroc joined the company as a franchise agent and subsequently purchased the chain from the McDonald brothers and contributed to its international growth.
McDonald's Plaza, located in Oak Brook, Illinois is the headquarters of McDonald's. It sits on the site of the former headquarters and stabling area of Paul Butler, the founder of Oak Brook. In 1971 McDonald's moved into the Oak Brook facility from an office within the Chicago Loop.
Most of the standalone McDonald's restaurants offer both counter and drive through services with indoor and sometimes outdoor seating. Drive-Thru, Auto-Mac, Pay and Drive, or "McDrive" as it is known in many countries, often has separate stations for placing, paying for, and picking up orders, though the latter two steps are frequently combined. In 1975 it was first introduced in Arizona following the lead of other fast-food chains. In 1986 a restaurant on similar lines was opened in Britain at Fallowfield, Manchester.
McDonald's introduced McCafe, keeping in mind the current trend for high quality coffee and the popularity of coffee shops in general. McCafe is a cafe style accompaniment to McDonald's restaurants in the style of Starbucks. It is a concept created by McDonald's Australia (colloquially known as "Maccas"), starting with Melbourne in 1993. Most of the McDonald's in Australia have McCafe's located within the existing McDonald's restaurant. In Tasmania, McCafes is present in every store and the other states are also adapting it. Some Australian stores have noticed a 60% increase in sales after upgrading the new McCafes look. By the end of 2003 there were 600 McCafes worldwide.
McExpress have limited seating or menu or may be located in a Shopping Mall while some locations are connected to Gas Stations/Convenience Stores. Some are located in Walmart stores. McStop is a location targeted at truckers and travellers which may have services found at Truck Stops. Since 1997, one kosher McDonald's has been located in the Abasto Mall, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. This is in addition to many kosher branches in Israel.
